Brief characterization

Plants monoecious; stems often striped red and green or white and green; upper branches bearing terminal spike-like racemes of numerous, clustered, small, unisexual flowers; female flowers lenticular, lacking perianth, consisting of ovary and style enclosed by 2 enlarged bracts, ca. 7 mm long including bracts; male flowers with 3-5 perianth segments and no bracts, ca. 2 mm across, in upper axils or mixed with female flowers.

Cultivar and/or species variation

Few cultivars; flowering stems yellow, red, red-purple, or green.
