Central and southern Europe, Central Asia.

Brief characterization

Round to ovate, perfoliate leaves; small yellow flowers (ca. 2 mm across) in terminal compound umbels; secondary umbels subtended by involucel of 4-7 yellowish-green, leaflike bracts significantly wider than umbel diameter; involucre absent; corolla of 5 inflexed petals; styles enlarged at base, forming a stylopodium.

Cultivar and/or species variation

Cultivars few.

May be confused with

Bupleurum longifolia L. (a sometimes-cultivated weed) bears primary umbels subtended by a leafy involucre wider than umbel; B. rotundifolium lacks an involucre.
