Brief characterization

Deeply lobed to pinnate, spiny-toothed, alternate leaves; discoid heads of flowers (florets) solitary or several per stem, 3-5 cm across; head subtended by cup-shaped to bell-shaped involucre of narrow, imbricate, often spiny-tipped phyllaries in multiple rows; disc floret long and narrow, with linear lobes and long-exserted style; style branches mostly fused; pappus of white, plumose, capillary bristles shorter than corolla tube.
