Origin

Southern North America to northern South America.

Brief characterization

Simple, ovate to lanceolate, decussate, sessile leaves, sometimes clasping; flowers borne singly or in clusters from upper leaf axils, emerging from buds with tightly twisted petals; 5 awl-shaped, keeled sepals; cup- or bell-shaped corolla with 5 (rarely 6) overlapping petals (in single cultivars).

Cultivar and/or species variation

Cultivar series in many colors including white, violet, lavender, pink, yellow, and green, in both single and double forms; flowers to 6(8) cm across.
