Genus of about 45 species, including many hybrids. Numerous cultivars, many probably based on hybrids of obscure parentage.

Origin

South Africa.

Brief characterization

Thin, wiry, short stems bearing short, linear leaves and spikes of few to many star-shaped flowers; 2 bracts subtend each flower; perianth tube often very slender; 6 tepals in 2 whorls of 3 with lobes usually longer than tube, often with contrasting color at throat; 3 stamens.

Cultivar and/or species variation

Perianth tube long to short, narrow (pedicel-like) to campanulate; tepal lobes suborbicular to oblong, ca. 10-25 mm long; flower and throat color highly variable.
