Brief characterization

Simple, linear to rounded, toothed leaves; dense, spike-like terminal racemes of outward-facing flowers; deeply cut calyx with usually 4 unequally sized lobes; corolla often shorter than calyx, sympetalous, with 4 spreading, often unequally-sized lobes; 2 functional stamens.

Flowers 5-15 mm across, mostly pink, purple, or white.
